November 3, 2016Children have a hard enough time navigating school, but those whose parents are HIV-positive and/or are battling drug or alcohol addiction are at risk of getting left behind. That is why Tutor Doctor’s Martin Browne is partnering with Positive Help, a charity partially funded by Scottish Government to provide support for children affected by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C across Edinburgh and Lothians.
Martin, along with Positive Help, are working to improve education standards and close the achievement gap for those students who are at a disadvantage because of their personal and/or family circumstances. The hope is that Tutor Doctor and the Scottish Government can break the cycle and provide these students with a better future.
The initiative will see Tutor Doctor Edinburgh training staff members at Positive Help, free of charge, providing them with the skills and expertise to enhance their current “Study Buddy” programme. Tutor Doctor will help them with teaching methods, share knowledge and best practice and provide valuable feedback on Positive Help’s training programmes and group learning sessions.
As Martin tells the Scotsman, “we are delighted to be partnering with Positive Help to support the great work they do with disadvantaged kids in Edinburgh and across the Lothians.”
“Tutor Doctor has over 15 years experience providing one-to-one tutoring services in the home, which has such a fundamentally positive impact on children. It is this breadth of expertise and knowledge that we will be passing on to Positive Help’s volunteers, who will get free access to our carefully regulated, well-trained and highly experienced tutors, as well as a multitude of additional resources. We also hope that over time some of our tutors will go on to become volunteers for Positive Help, to further enhance the service.”
