Meet Steve Magat, a Tutor Doctor Franchisee.
"There comes a time when you realize that it’s time to change directions. Some people get comfortable then one day you realize that in order to get ahead, you can’t stay in your comfort zone - I was comfortable. When I was just starting my family, I was recruited from New York to work for a startup financial company in Richmond VA. That start up became Capital One. I didn’t realize it at the time but that move was a major risk. I saw it as an opportunity and was willing to jump in.
I became more comfortable with my position. I managed my projects, had good years and bad professional years until the business climate changed. The bigger we got, the more my teammates and I were called on to make things predictable and economical. In time, I went from being a valuable fountain of knowledge to just a cog in the process wheel. Eventually, I processed myself out of a job, however, I learned the value of owning my job. When my team succeeded - it was great. I owned my projects, I set goals, kept to a budget and I answered to clients. I also found that I enjoyed teaching my clients what I was doing. Eventually, I was laid off and I found myself having to reevaluate my career.
I thought about my options. I really wanted to make a difference. My parents and many family members were teachers, I was involved with my children’s schools, volunteered to coach sports teams and I was a Boy Scout Leader. Therefore, I knew where my passions were and Tutor Doctor fit the bill for what I was looking for. I work with and hire the best people and the “hands on me” likes to talk to parents and students to help them succeed. I have the pride that knows what I’m doing is making a difference. I treat my clients like individuals and they appreciate the service and the quality of the professionals that I bring to them.
I knew I was taking a risk in opening my own business but I realized that you can’t get too comfortable and knew that if I found something that I could both run and work that I would have the opportunity to create my own success and do something that I was passionate for".
