Life of a Mompreneur: Balancing Life As Mom and as a Franchise Owner

Thinking about becoming your own boss? Except you don’t want to take the risk of starting a business from scratch. As a result, you’re feeling stuck. What are your options?

Often, finding a healthy work-life balance as a new business owner is treated as a myth. But it’s possible. Franchising is one way a parent can also be the boss. One perk of becoming a franchisee is being in charge of your own time. Many franchisees set their own hours, work from home or have family members help in the business. Franchisees can set their schedule to never miss a recital, soccer game or field trip.

These Tutor Doctor mompreneurs share why they joined the Tutor Doctor family and how they balance being a parent while running a successful franchise from their home.

Kim Rohr of Gateway, Arizona

Kim and her husband, Bill, have been owners of their Tutor Doctor franchise in Gateway and Mesa, Arizona since 2019 and are parents to 3 kids.

“We’re in this business because we're a hundred percent in support of the mission and vision of Tutor Doctor. But there's also a personal reason that my husband and I decided to embark on stepping away from corporate and owning our own business.

I had been in corporate America for about 16 years. I had long commutes. I was giving up a lot of what it meant to be a mother, which was very important to me. I had to pick and choose what sporting events I decided to show up for, not being able to go to doctor's appointments, never being able to drop off and pick up my kids.”

Kim shared how it was during her last week of maternal leave that she realized she did not want to go back to her corporate job. The most enjoyment she’d had in her life recently was in those 12 weeks with her young child and being present with her family. That was when she told her husband she was ready for something new.

“I want to stay in a place where I can decide when I want to go on vacation. I can take my work with me. If I want to, I can show up to every track meet. I can be present with my family when I want to. Maybe that means working at midnight until midnight some days, but I get to decide what that looks like.”

Tejal Mali of Tutor Doctor Sherwood Park, Alberta

Tejal has been the sole owner of her Tutor Doctor location in Sherwood, Alberta for over a decade. Before becoming a franchisee, Tejal was an elementary school teacher who taught kindergarten for 6 years. She had two daughters 18 months apart, and it was during her second maternal leave that she started searching for new opportunities.

“I wanted to have a career but maintain the balance and flexibility I needed in my schedule to be a mom. After researching the franchise, I felt being a Tutor Doctor franchisee would allow me to grow a business and work from home, while also providing the flexibility to make my own hours and be able to raise my kids.” Explains Tejal “I was having this conflict where I wanted to be with my kids, but I also wanted to still have something going for myself, and I was passionate about owning my own business. It has been challenging, but my kids literally have grown as my business has grown. They were never in childcare; they've always been home with me because I've worked from home.”

Tejal shared how building her business from home helped her focus on raising her daughters. They even supported her in small ways, from accompanying her at community events to handing out flyers.

“I remember one day when the girls were maybe three and four, they were playing and they would pick up a phone and pretend like they were picking up a call. They'd be like ‘Good afternoon, Tutor Doctor. We do one-to-one tutoring!’” shared Tejal, laughing.

Amrit Rahi of Greenwich, UK

Amrit Rahi recently celebrated her 5th year as a Tutor Doctor franchise owner and currently employs 250 tutors who provide personalized academic support in southeast London. Amrit is passionate about uplifting students and youth in her community, and had previously worked in youth services in Greenwich and Bexley before becoming a franchisee in 2017.

Amrit said: “Tutor Doctor has given me the opportunity that I was looking for. I love being able to see children and young people achieve their full potential in every way – whether it be academic or personally.”

During the pandemic, she experienced her own personal challenges, and an unexpected change of circumstances left Amrit fending for her family, including her two children. This, however, only pushed Amrit to work harder. By elevating the services Tutor Doctor offers, and support from her motivated team of tutors helping take on more responsibility, they weable to hit the ground running out of the pandemic.

Amrit is also grateful that Tutor Doctor gives her the flexibility to spend more time with her family.

She explained: “I regularly take my children to and from school, so it’s had an overwhelmingly positive impact on my family life too.”
