September 7, 2016It’s back to school, and for many Canadian students that means one thing – preparing for their standardized tests.
While some provinces, like Alberta, have done away with the Provincial Achievement Tests in favour of more “"student-friendly literacy and numeracy assessments at the beginning of school years,” provinces like Ontario rely on more typical standardized tests to determine how students are doing in core subjects like math and reading.
Whether you love them or hate them, these tests are a part of the curriculum, and the recent results have not been promising. In Ontario alone, student performance has been steadily declining since 2009, with 2016 marking the first year since 2000 that more than half of grade 6 students failed to meet the provincial math standard. In Manitoba, scores have seen reading levels drop between 2007 and 2013, with the province placing dead last in all test categories in 2013. Overall, in the last decade, math scores among 15-year-old Canadian students have fallen by 14%.
There are some government initiatives to counteract this trend; however, some Canadian parents feel this isn’t happening quickly enough. So as children go back to school, parents are increasingly turning to education franchises to help bolster their children’s scores.
Because of this, the tutoring market is growing exponentially. In Canada, specifically, the private tutoring market is now worth $1 billion, and is only growing. In fact, the industry could be worth US$196.3 billion by 2020.
With the market share growing like that, the news is good for struggling students and potential entrepreneurs.
