Homework Hints from Parents Hurt More than they Help

Some parents believe that tutoring is unnecessary, after all, they’ve been through school, they should be able to help their child as well as any tutor. However, according to a recent study, that logic may be hindering their children.

The survey was commissioned by Tutor Doctor and looked at of 1,758 homes, across four countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia). It found that when parents try to help their kids with schoolwork, it tends to strain the relationship. In fact, 95 percent of homes that took part in the survey reported that having a family member assist with homework increases, rather than decreases, the child’s stress levels.

Of those surveyed, 8 out of 10 parents claimed they regularly helped their children with homework. Of that, the number of parents who said their children were “easily frustrated” was nearly 75 percent. The result? Almost 93 percent of surveyed families reported that homework impacted the stress levels at home.

President of Tutor Doctor, Frank Milner, explains: “When parents attempt to help their children with difficult homework, they have all the right intentions. They just want their child to succeed in school. The problem is that it usually backfires. The parent is tired from a long day at work. Their patience runs thin. Both the parent and the child get frustrated. That’s when we get the call.”

Frank adds that many parents who contact Tutor Doctor refer to family arguments over homework as their reason for needing a tutor. “We tell them that’s common and normal. Children respond positively to an outside tutor, especially one that’s been carefully matched to their individual personality and needs.”

Parents see Tutor Doctor as a welcome alternative to the constant infighting.
